The mysterious explosion outside a CRPF school in north Delhi’s Rohini area was so powerful that it created a large hole in the school wall and the police had questioned the caller who first reported the incident, according to an FIR filed over the incident.
An investigation was underway on the kind of explosives used in the blast, which occurred in Prashant Vihar at 7:40 am on Sunday, the FIR stated, details of which were exclusively accessed by India Today TV.
After the explosion, a cloud of white smoke billowed into the sky and a significant amount of white powder was found scattered at the blast site, the FIR said, adding that forensic officials collected a sample to determine the cause of the explosion.
The sound of the explosion was very loud, and the windows and signboards of shops opposite the CRPF Public School were damaged.
Akash Kumar, who first informed the police about the explosion, said he was sleeping at the time of the incident. The Delhi Police later questioned him to get clues regarding the blast.
An FIR was lodged against unknown individuals under the Explosives Act.
According to Delhi Police sources, the explosion was caused by a low-intensity IED (Improvised Explosive Device) controlled by a timer or remote, without any shrapnel or ball bearings. No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident.
The blast damaged a section of the school wall, shattered windowpanes of nearby shops, and wrecked several parked cars. The sound of the explosion was heard at least two kilometres away.
A pro-Khalistani group has claimed responsibility for the explosion and the Delhi Police have reached out to social media platforms and the messaging app Telegram, requesting details about the channel where the post was made, officials said.
Delhi Police said they were investigating a possible Khalistani connection after the Telegram post claimed the explosion was in retaliation for the alleged targeting of pro-Khalistan elements by Indian agents. The probe was being done after a video of the blast with a ‘Khalistan Zindabad’ watermark at the bottom appeared on the Telegram channel, along with a message threatening the Indian government.
